Japanese restaurants and tourist attractions have increasingly begun to introduce different pricing for tourists and locals, writes ABC News. The yen has weakened, which has attracted tourists while increasing costs for local residents.
Every month since January, visitor numbers have been higher than pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, the yen has lost about 30 percent against the US dollar since 2021.
With different price levels, for example, restaurants can continue to be available to Japanese people as well, says tourism expert Garth Lean.
- But for the tourists, it can be a more expensive experience.

"Tourists cancel late - very few Japanese do that"
The Tokyo restaurant Tamatebako gives Japanese people a discount of around SEK 100 on the buffet. That's what owner Shogo Yonemitsu tells ABC, which draws attention to how many businesses in Japan have started introducing different prices for Japanese and tourists.
He says that mass tourism has meant that he has had to hire English-speaking staff, who often receive a slightly higher salary. He does not think that the people of Tokyo should have to suffer from extra costs that come with tourism.
- We have also experienced that many tourists cancel at the last minute, which very few Japanese do.
