Hurricane Beryl hit Grenada last night and caused great devastation.

The US Weather Service is now raising the warning to a Category 5 hurricane - the highest.

Drone images from Grenada show great devastation along the coastline where Hurricane Beryl made landfall last night. Buildings are without roofs and the streets are full of rubble.

The hurricane was then classified as a 4 on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale, which measures wind strength.

Winds of 225 kilometers per hour threaten Carriacou and Grenada, according to the US hurricane agency NHC.

"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation," the NHC said in a statement.

"There is a very high risk of injury or death to people, livestock and domestic animals due to flying and falling debris".

Beryl is now expected to move on over the Caribbean and increase in wind strength. On Tuesday morning, the NHC said that the hurricane is feared to reach the highest category, a 5, on its way to Jamaica.

The hurricane is described as a historic weather system as it increased in strength enormously quickly. In just 42 hours, she grew from a storm to a Category 4 hurricane, AP writes.

It has previously only happened six times.

According to AP, the reason for the rapid growth is record-warm sea temperatures. Already now, the sea in the area is warmer than it usually is in September when it is actually "hurricane season".
