The Turkish parliament on Tuesday voted through a controversial law that allows the killing of street dogs that are sick or "behaving badly". Several news agencies write that. The law also forces mayors to get homeless dogs off the streets, for example by placing them in homes for stray dogs.
According to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose party proposed the proposal, the law is necessary to prevent Turkey from suffering a rabies epidemic.
The law could affect millions of dogs, and critics say it could lead to a "massacre" of the country's homeless dogs. Animal rights organizations want to see the dogs sterilized instead.
