Three demonstration leaders arrested by police in hospital
Police in Bangladesh have arrested three demonstration leaders at the hospital in Dhaka, hospital staff told AFP. The staff do not know where the three students – Asif Mahmud, Nahid Islam and Abu Baker Majumder – have been taken.
The hospital manager says she did not want to discharge the protest leaders, but that the police pressured her to do so. According to the trio, they received treatment at the hospital after being tortured by police earlier during the demonstrations.
Nearly 200 people have so far been killed in the protests, which initially targeted a controversial labor quota system. The protests, which have grown in strength over time, have been met with a brutal police response.
