At least eleven people have been killed in a rocket attack from Lebanon against a soccer field, Israeli emergency services say.
It is the deadliest attack on Israeli targets since fighting with the Hezbollah militia group broke out along the country's northern border - where tensions are now running high.
Israel singles out the Lebanon-based group as responsible for the attack, which was aimed at the Israeli-annexed area of the Golan Heights. The rocket struck a soccer field in the town of Majdal Shams, which still has a predominantly Arab population after the area was captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War.
"The terrorist organization Hezbollah is behind the rocket attack on a soccer field in the city of Majdal Shams earlier this evening, where many civilians, among them children, died," the military command said in a statement on Saturday evening.
Israel's prime minister says Hezbollah will pay a "heavy" price for the attack.
However, Hezbollah denies involvement and states that it has carried out other attacks against Israeli military targets. These are described as a response to Israeli airstrikes against villages in southern Lebanon.
Four Hezbollah members were killed earlier on Saturday in an Israeli attack.
Many of the dead and injured in the attack on Majdal Shams are said to be between the ages of 10 and 20, according to Israeli authorities. In addition to the dead, over 19 people are said to have been injured, several of them seriously.
