Turkey closes border with Syria after violence
Turkey closes its border crossings with Syria after Syrian protests at the border degenerate, AFP reports. Protesters allegedly threw stones and shot at the Turkish border guards. Seven Syrian protesters have been killed and at least 20 injured, according to Al Jazeera.
The protests erupted after attacks on Syrian shops and cars in Turkey, where a Syrian man was accused of raping a child, writes CNN. Turkish police have arrested 474 people suspected of having participated, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya says on X.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemns the violence.
- It is unacceptable to burn houses, vandalize and light fires in the streets. Nothing can be achieved by stoking racism and hatred against refugees, he says according to Al Jazeera.
Over 3.5 million Syrian refugees live in Turkey. Several times in recent years, the spread of rumors has resulted in racist violence against the group.
