"Today we took the first step towards lifting restrictions on the internet by demonstrating unity," writes Telecom Minister Sattar Hashemi on X.
According to state media, the announcement was preceded by a struggle between President Masoud Pezeshkian's line for more openness and a more hardline faction within the regime, writes the FT.

Protests against maintaining internet ban in parliament
The decision to lift the ban on Whatsapp and Google Play needs to be approved by Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei before it can be implemented, writes the London-based Iran International.
And far from everyone is happy that the ban is being scrapped. According to the pro-regime Iranian news agency SNN, 136 members of parliament have signed a call for Iran's Cyber Security Council to maintain the restrictions.
The council, which made the decision, includes the country's president, the speaker of parliament and several ministers.
