Christian Protests in Syria – Christmas Tree Burned
Hundreds of protesters have gathered in the Christian neighborhoods of the Syrian capital Damascus, after a Christmas tree was burned near Hama in the central parts of the country. This is reported by AFP.
The news agency's reporters on the spot testify that slogans about Christian rights echo as the protesters move towards the Bab Sharqi district, where the Orthodox Patriarchate is based.
– If we are not allowed to live out our Christian faith in our own country, as we used to be allowed to do, we do not belong here anymore, one of the protesters told the news agency.
The protests erupted after a video was spread on social media, which reportedly showed masked men setting fire to a Christmas tree in al-Suqaylabiyah, a city mostly inhabited by Christians.
A religious leader for the ruling Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has stated on social media that the fire was started by “non-Syrians”, who will be found and punished.
– The tree will be restored and lit tomorrow morning, he said according to AFP.
