Trump's victory
After Trump's speech – Danish billions for the defense of Greenland

The day after Donald Trump announced that he wants to "take control" of Greenland, Denmark is presenting a new billion-dollar package for Arctic defense, reports Jyllands-Posten. The money will, among other things, go to new drones, ships and more personnel on the self-governing Danish island.

- It is ironic that it coincides with the message from the US. We have been working on the plan to invest in the Arctic for many months, says Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen.

DR's defense correspondent Mads Korsager says that the defense of the Arctic is a task that has grown in scope and importance.

- It is an enormous area that is of increasing strategic and military importance, for the US but also for Russia, says Korsager.

Kurdish forces not in agreement: “Turkey is trying to shut us out”

The Kurdish militia groups in Syria deny that they are part of the agreement between the country’s HTS leadership and rebel forces to become part of the defense ministry, Al Jazeera reports.

The agreement was presented by de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Tuesday as if the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, SDF, had joined. The issue “should be discussed directly” with the SDF, spokesman Farhad Shami told AFP.

At the same time, the SDF is fighting in northern Syria against Turkey, which is closely allied with the de facto leadership, according to the AP.

– Turkey is trying to distract us with fighting and exclude us from the negotiations in Damascus, says Ruken Jamal, spokesperson for the female Kurdish forces YPJ, which are part of the SDF.

Fighting has also been ongoing directly between the SDF and the army of the provisional Syrian government.

Christmas attack in Magdeburg
The attack mobilizes right-wing extremists: “Threatening atmosphere”

The motive for the bloody attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, is still unclear. Yet right-wing extremists have been quick to blame migration, writes Deutsche Welle.

“I have never experienced such a hostile and threatening atmosphere before,” says a student of automotive engineering who lives in Magdeburg.

The violence prevention center Salam in the state of Saxony-Anhalt has a similar picture of the situation. The center has noted a significant increase in violence against people with a foreign background since the attack. The fact that the suspected perpetrator is said to be Islamophobic and right-wing extremist is a paradox, says Hans Goldenbaum, radicalization expert at Salam.

“It shows the power of this right-wing extremist discourse and how disconnected it is from reality,” he says.

New rules in Gran Canaria – no sex in the water

The city of Agaete in Gran Canaria has introduced a series of new beach bans, reports Expressen. Smoking at swimming areas or using parasols with sharp edges that could injure other bathers is no longer allowed. All forms of sexual activity in the water are also banned.

In addition, restaurants that do not take care of napkins that blow away risk fines.

The bans come after Mallorca and Ibiza introduced high fines for smoking, alcohol consumption and littering in certain public places, writes GP.

Violence in Haiti
Journalists murdered at a press conference at a hospital

Two journalists have been shot dead and several injured during a press conference at a hospital in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, according to the AP.

They were supposed to report that the hospital had reopened, after being forced to close due to gang violence in February.

The leader of the gang Viv Ansanm has claimed responsibility for the attack in a video on social media in which he says that the gang had not approved the hospital's opening.
