Elections in Norway

Red-Greens lead in final poll ahead of Norwegian election

The left is in the lead in the final poll ahead of the election in Norway on Monday. The red-greens look set to win a majority as the Conservatives struggle with their lowest numbers in 16 years.

In the poll, commissioned by the newspapers Klassekampen and Nationen, the social democratic Labour Party is the largest with 27 percent. Conservatives, often compared to the Moderates in Sweden, are down to 13.5 percent and are well ahead of the anti-immigration Progress Party at 20.8 percent.

Much will be determined by how the small parties fare. Among the red-greens, the Red and Socialist Left are close to the cutoff, and on the right, the Left is balancing on the edge.

Listhaug under attack: “You are a notorious liar”

It got really heated when the Norwegian party leaders clashed in the final debate before the election on Monday. The focus was on the Progress Party’s Sylvi Listhaug, who accused Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of spreading lies during the election campaign.

“The Labour Party and their main sponsor LO have spread scaremongering and lies during the election campaign,” she said.

It got even more heated when the chairman of the Labour Party’s youth union AUF, Gaute Skjervø, accused Listhaug of being an opponent of the trade union movement.

“You lie all the time. You lie and lie. You are a notorious liar,” the FRP leader replied.
