WHO: Mpox no longer a global health emergency
The Mpox virus no longer constitutes a global health emergency. This is what the World Health Organization (WHO) Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, according to news agencies.
The WHO classified the spread of the virus as a health emergency last summer, but after a long-term decline, the emergency is being lifted.
- Lifting the emergency declaration does not mean, of course, that the threat is over or that our work stops, says Ghebreyesus.
AU: Mpox remains a health emergency in Africa
The World Health Organization WHO no longer classifies the viral disease mpox as a global health emergency after the number of cases in Africa has fallen steadily recently. The African Union, however, is more cautious.
"The current downward trends are not yet stable enough to justify lifting the emergency at the continental level," the AU said in a statement.
The viral disease has spread primarily in Africa, although cases have been recorded in countries all over the world. The worst affected has been Congo-Kinshasa, where almost half of the 34,000 global cases this year have been recorded.
