Ayatollah admits thousands dead – – accuses Trump
US President Donald Trump is responsible for the demonstrators killed during the protests, Iran's supreme leader announced.
The ayatollah admits that "several thousand" have been killed.
According to Ali Khamenei, the unrest was caused by the US, which he claims aims to "swallow Iran".
"The Iranian nation broke the back of the uprising; it must also break the back of the rioters", he wrote on X on Saturday and stated that Iran will not "spare domestic or international criminals".
In comments reported by Iranian state-run media, the ayatollah accuses people "linked to Israel and the US" of killing several thousand people during the protests.
Khamenei and the Iranian regime have repeatedly accused the protesters of acting on behalf of the United States, Israel and “foreign terrorists.”
Trump repeatedly urged protesters to continue taking to the streets. Promises to come to their rescue fell through after the president said on Wednesday he had learned that Iran had stopped killing protesters.
