Researcher: We lack a plan B if the US leaves NATO

Representatives of the government and the defense say that Sweden lacks a plan B if the US leaves NATO - yet we seem to be mostly trying to buy ourselves time, writes August Danielson, postdoctoral fellow in political science, in SvD Debatt.

“Today, Sweden’s security policy strategy appears more like a postponement of uncomfortable decisions, while crucial room for action is rapidly closing.”

A plan B could be a new, independent European defense alliance, like the former Western European Union, according to Danielson.

If NATO loses its credibility without us having an alternative, we risk pressure not only from Russia but also from the United States, he continues.

Political situation in Uganda

Internet shut down and chaos ahead of elections in Uganda

The upcoming elections in Uganda are marked by political tensions and violence. On Tuesday, the country shut down the internet to prevent the spread of "disinformation".

81-year-old President Yoweri Museveni, who has led the country for four decades, looks set to remain in power. But not without opposition. 43-year-old musician Bobi Wine is the president's main challenger, and has managed to attract young voters through his election promise to put an end to "Museveni's dictatorship."

At the same time, Wine's campaign rallies have been attacked by security forces and mass arrests of his supporters. One person is also said to have been killed in connection with an intervention.

Last week, the UN Human Rights Council said that the election is taking place in a country with "widespread oppression."
