Minister to Starmer: Ready to take over if everything falls
British Health Minister Wes Streeting has reportedly told Prime Minister Keir Starmer internally that he is ready to take over if Starmer is forced from his post, writes The Telegraph.
He has also reportedly made it clear that he will not outwardly demand Starmer's resignation, but that he is preparing a campaign if "everything falls apart".
Internal criticism of Starmer has been heavy after the fiasco in last week's local elections and around 30 MPs have openly demanded that he resign.
Challenger's demands: Steer Labour left or resign
Keir
Starmer must lead the Labour Party clearly to the left if he wants to
remain as party leader and prime minister. This is according to Angela
Rayner, who has been singled out as one of the leading candidates to
succeed Starmer if he is forced out, reports The Independent.
-
What we are doing now is not working and must change. This could be our
last chance, says Rayner, who was previously deputy prime minister but
was forced out after it was discovered that she had not paid property
tax.
Among other things, she wants to see measures to reduce household costs and for several companies to be nationalised.
- Labour exists so that people can have a better life. It is not happening fast enough right now, she says.
On Monday, Keir Starmer will give a speech that has been pointed out as decisive for whether he can stay in office or not.
