Latvian defense minister resigns after drone crash
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced his resignation after two Ukrainian drones entered Latvian airspace and crashed on Thursday, Reuters reports.
One of the drones crashed into an oil depot in the city of Rezekne, about 40 kilometers from the border with Russia.
Prime Minister Evika Silina demanded Spruds' resignation earlier in the day. She said anti-drone systems had not been activated quickly enough.
The drones came from Ukraine and were deliberately knocked off course by Russian electronic equipment, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Andriy Sybiha.
Thousands of Colombians fighting for Ukraine: “A total war”
The largest group of foreign volunteer soldiers fighting for Ukraine comes from Colombia. This is between 3,000 and 7,000 people since the war began, writes DN.
– The war in Ukraine is unlike anything I have ever experienced. This is a total war, with infantry, artillery, and aerial bombardment. And it has changed radically since I arrived, Tanos, who came to Ukraine in 2023, tells the newspaper.
Before that, he spent nine years in the Colombian military. Many veterans of the country's long-running civil war have sought refuge abroad in order to earn money.
– Everyone has to make a living, but those who come here solely for the money rarely stay long-term. It is not easy money, says Tanos.
