Yellen: Decoupling the US from China would be "catastrophic"
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen believes that any attempt to decouple the country's economy from China's could lead to disaster. That's what the Financial Times writes.
During a speech on Monday, she called for a "constructive and fair" economic relationship between the major powers.
The financial newspaper interprets the statement as part of Washington's approach to repairing the strained relationship.
- [We] will assert ourselves when our interests are at stake but we are not trying to decouple our economy from China's.
Hammering out the contours of a healthy relationship is not easy, she underlined.
- But we can find a way forward if China is willing to do its part.

A mass murder a week - the US can break a grim record
111 days of 2023 have passed and the statistics for fatal shootings in the United States are blood red. 17 shootings classified as mass murders have occurred and in them 88 people have died, AP reports.
So far this year, there has been an average of one mass murder every 6.53 days. The rate means that 2023 looks set to be the bloodiest since the measurements began in 2006. However, the news agency writes that these events represent only a fraction of gun violence in the United States.
The Gun Violence Archive, which keeps statistics on shootings in the country, writes that 12,809 people have died from firearms so far this year, 10,015 have been injured. 167 mass shootings have taken place and in these 533 children have died and 1,288 have been injured.
The change of leadership in NATO
Mette Frederiksen is said to be wanted as NATO chief
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is one of the most sought-after candidates to succeed Jens Stoltenberg as NATO Secretary General, according to information to VG.
She is said to be liked by US President Joe Biden and her CV as a long-time head of government is considered to meet NATO's requirements. The question that remains is whether she is ready to leave the post of prime minister in Denmark.
There has previously been information that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, may be a candidate for the post. However, she reportedly refused. Another candidate said to have turned down the post is Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

The fighting between the regular army and the RSF has been going on since 15 April

50,000 protesters gather before the marathon in London
Around 50,000 protesters from climate organizations such as Extinction rebellion and Just stop oil now are expected to gather in a three-day demonstration in London this weekend, reports Sky News. The demonstration has been nicknamed "The Big One".
On Sunday, the London marathon is organized and Extinction rebellion has promised not to interfere with the race. Marathon manager Hugh Brasher says he trusts the organization.
- I hope that Just stop oil and the other organizations listen to them, he tells the channel.
The Independent reported earlier this week that Just stop oil plans to disrupt "cultural and sporting events" during the demonstration.
