An extreme heat has moved in over Thailand.  

Now the authorities are urging people to stay indoors. 

- It is hot. Very hot, 63-year-old Rungtip Sangvittayothai told AP. 

The heat warning covers large parts of Thailand.

In the Bagna district of Bangkok , the temperature reached 42 degrees on Saturday, while the heat index, which measures how the temperature feels, was 54 degrees.  

A new record, according to the meteorological department, reports Reuters

Even on the holiday island of Phuket, the index for how the temperatures feel is expected to show over 54 degrees.  

- What is happening right now is caused by climate change, which affects abnormal weather and a phenomenon called extreme weather, Mathinee Yucharoen, researcher in coastal oceanography and climate change at Prince of Songkhla University, told Reuters.  

Temperatures will exceed 40 degrees in at least 28 provinces on Saturday.

Heatstroke and summer storms 

Authorities have urged people to avoid outdoor activities in the coming week to avoid heat stroke. Summer storms are also expected. 

In Samut Prakan province, just south of Bangkok, a policeman directing traffic collapsed and died of a heart attack, Reuters reports. 

According to the news agency, old battery-powered hand fans are widely used by residents of the capital trying to cool off.  

- It's hot, very hot. That's why I have my fan with me, says 63-year-old Rungtip Sangvittayothai.
