The party is closing in behind Trump – the expletives are pouring in
The conviction against Donald Trump was painted as a litmus test for the party colleagues in the Republicans. Would the party end up behind Trump or would the verdict be the final straw?
The response after two days seems to be a resounding turnout, writes the BBC. House Speaker Mike Johnson said it was a shameful milestone in US history, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the New York court a "kangaroo court" and Senator Marco Rubio likened the process to a mock trial.
- This is what you see in communist countries, said Rubio.
One of the few Republicans to express support for the lawsuit is Larry Hogan, who is running for the Senate in Maryland. In a post on social media, he urged Americans to respect the ruling. The answer came just a few minutes later.
"You just ended your campaign," Trump aide Chris LaCivita wrote on X.

sees "dangerous" and "reckless" Trump rhetoric
US President Joe Biden is very critical of how Donald Trump and many of his supporters have reacted to the conviction. Trump has said, among other things, that the White House has rigged the trial.
- It's reckless, it's dangerous and it's irresponsible to say this was rigged, just because they don't like the outcome, Biden said on Friday.
Trump's lawyer, Todd Blanche, told NBC that he plans to appeal the verdict.
- The goal is to appeal quickly and hopefully be cleared quickly.
