Analysis: Macron is taking a giant political risk
When Emmanuel Macron announces new parliamentary elections, he is taking a huge political risk, writes the BBC's Paris correspondent Hugh Schofield in an analysis. The announcement is a political bomb that no assessor had expected.
The result of the EU election, which shows that Marine Le Pen's right-wing nationalist party Nationalel Samling takes a big victory, was not at all unexpected. Polling station surveys reflect the opinion polls of recent weeks.
"One must therefore assume that Macron saw what was coming, and prepared his response well in advance," writes Schofield.
French analyst Jean-Michel Aphatie believes there is a real possibility that Macron will resign after the parliamentary elections. The election is announced in three weeks, on June 30.
"Does he seriously believe that the National Assembly will back down until then? In addition, there is a high probability that there will be no stable majority after the election. And after that? The hypothesis of Macron's resignation is a possibility tonight," he writes on X.
