Gantz leaves Israel's government - sees Gaza strategy
Defense Minister Benny Gantz is leaving Israel's coalition government, he announced, according to Reuters.
- A difficult and painful decision, says Gantz, who at the same time accuses Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of putting politics before Gaza strategy.
- This is not the right time to abandon the front, says Netanyahu in a first statement.
Without Gantz, the prime minister loses the important support of the middle bloc, which helped him broaden support for the war both at home and abroad, writes Reuters. Instead, the prime minister is forced to lean more towards the unpopular extreme right.

Gantz's departure increases the pressure on Netanyahu - from several quarters
Benny Gantz's resignation from the Israeli government means that the ground is once again shaking under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Gantz has filled an important role as a representative of the political center, and a White House source told Haaretz that pressure from the United States may increase after losing its mediator.
On the far right of the political spectrum that makes up the government is Itamar Ben-Gvir, minister of national security, who was quick to claim a seat in Netanyahu's war cabinet after the announcement of Gantz's resignation.
According to Haaretz, Netanyahu is considering dissolving the war cabinet instead. With Gantz's departure, it now consists only of Netanyahu himself and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Death toll rises in Gaza - IDF: "Great risks"
The death toll in Gaza's Nuseirat has risen to at least 274 after the Israeli army freed four hostages, the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Ministry of Health said.
EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell condemned Saturday's events and described them as a "massacre of civilians" in a post on X. The Israeli military has confirmed that people have been killed in the operation, without commenting on the number of civilians. An Israeli soldier was killed in the operation and, according to Hamas, three hostages were also killed.
- Getting the hostages home is our moral obligation and something we must strive for [...] We know that we have to take great risks for people's lives, says Israel's military chief Herzi Halevi in an interview with the Times of Israel.
