French government falls

French Prime Minister François Bayrou loses the vote of confidence in parliament.
This means that the government falls.
But Macron will not call new elections.
By 7 p.m., the French National Assembly had voted.
364 members voted to bring down the government – 194 voted against.
The result was no surprise, since criticism of the government has been strong. It has mainly been about Prime Minister Bayrou's tough savings. In order to reduce the country's enormous national debt, he has proposed, among other things, scrapping two public holidays, which has not been popular with the French.
Now Bayrou is forced to resign. In December, his predecessor Michel Barnier fell in a similar vote of no confidence.
This is the third prime minister to be ousted in just over a year. Now it is up to President Macron to, once again, try to find a new one.
Bayrou's successor will be appointed shortly, the Élysée Palace announced on Monday evening, according to AFP.
"A French problem"
Pia Fromlet, a euro economist at SEB, says that the announcement could make things "a little chaotic" on the stock market.
- But a lot is already priced in on the market. I think what people are a little afraid of is that there will continue to be such weak governments in France, which cannot get the budget through again, so that they end up in the same situation again, she says.
Whichever government takes over, their main task is to cut public spending, she says.
- And that is not popular, neither among the people nor the opposition. It's a rather thankless task. I'm more concerned in the longer term, that France doesn't get its hands on the public finances.
– But so far I think this is a French problem. It's not that I think we should worry about any spillover effects to the rest of Europe at the moment.
