Analysis: Russia under time pressure – wants to secure gains before support arrives
The Russian military likely feels pressure to make progress on the battlefield before new Western aid reaches Ukraine. It writes the US-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in an analysis.
"They try to secure offensive gains before the window closes," writes ISW.
In the last ten days, Russian forces have advanced five kilometers in eastern Ukraine and taken control of areas around the already captured town of Avdijivka.
Ukrainian forces that have withdrawn from the area have instead attempted to establish a new defense line along the Durna River in Donetsk, writes The Guardian. But even there, Russian forces have put an end to the plans.
Russia's next objective is likely to be to take control of the strategically important city of Pokrovsk, which the Ukrainians are using as a regrouping point. At the same time, a Russian offensive is underway to capture the town of Tjasiv Jar further north.
