Republican anger at the chancellor: "Incompetent"
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is calling on the chancellor of Columbia University to resign, reports The Hill. This is because he believes that the rector has failed to ensure the safety of Jewish students in connection with the pro-Palestinian protests.
He calls the principal Minouche Shafik a "weak" and "inept" leader. Ten Republican state politicians also demand her resignation.
Teaching is now being conducted remotely and Shafik has called on protesters who have camped out to leave the area.
According to NBC, students at several American universities are demanding that the schools cut ties to companies linked to Israel's war in Gaza.
