The G7 countries promise to phase out coal power by 2035

The G7 countries agree to have phased out coal as an energy source by 2035, AFP reports. France's Christophe Bechu, minister responsible for the green transition, says the decision shows that the countries are ready to live up to what was promised at the COP28 climate summit last year.

However, the agreement contains a proviso that countries can follow an alternative timetable if it means that it is still possible to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

According to information to Reuters, the writing is included to wink Japan and Germany, two G7 countries that are still heavily dependent on coal power.

Denmark close to reaching its climate goals by 2030

Denmark is close to reaching its goal of successfully reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by 2030. This is shown by a new compilation from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Research, according to Danish TV2.

According to the compilation, current policies will lead to a 68 percent reduction compared to 1990.

Climate Minister Lars Aagaard, Moderate Party, is satisfied. He says that the reduction in emissions is a result of ambitious agreements and broad political responsibility in combination with increased knowledge about emissions.

Swedish fuel policy contributes to Danish emission reductions

The fact that Sweden lowered its fuel taxes is pointed out as a reason why Denmark is in a much better position this year in terms of reaching its climate goal by 2030 than last year, reports DR. The Swedish policy means that more trucks refuel with diesel on the Swedish side of the Öresund Bridge.

Other "free reductions" that the Danish government can count on are two research reports that state that the carbon dioxide emissions from low-lying lands are less than previous assessments have claimed, and that the forests absorb more carbon dioxide when fewer trees are felled than estimated.

However, the biggest reduction comes from changes in the energy sector. On the other hand, the changes in the transport sector and above all in the agricultural sector are slower.
