The election is heating up – but is it too hot to vote?
Voter turnout in the first phase of Indian elections was four percentage points lower this year than in the last election in 2019, the Times of India reports. It worries both parties and the electoral authority, which is now planning to take measures to increase voter turnout.
However, it is not certain that the reduction is something that the authority can rely on: According to the newspaper, it may be due to the fact that it has simply been very hot since the election began, and that voters chose to stay in the shade rather than queue at the ballot boxes.
Political scientist Suhas Palshikar tells India Today that despite the loss, the country's voter turnout is still "robust" and is above 65 percent in many places.
