Same-sex relationships are prohibited in Iraq and can be punished with between ten and fifteen years in prison, AFP reports.
The package of laws that Parliament has hammered out criminalizes same-sex sex and the promotion of same-sex relationships. Transgender people can also be punished with prison for their gender identity.
Homosexual relationships have until now been legal, although not widely socially accepted.
- The change in the law regarding LGBTQ rights is a violation of basic human rights and means that Iraqis, who are already persecuted today, risk their lives, says Razaw Salihy at Amnesty International.

Tiktok star shot dead outside his home in Iraq
The Iraqi Tiktok star known by the name Om Fahad has been shot dead outside his home in the country's capital, Baghdad, reports AFP.
Surveillance images from the incident show how an unknown assailant, dressed as a food delivery man, walks up to the influencer's car and shoots her dead.
Om Fahad became famous through videos where she danced to Iraqi music. She was sentenced last year to six months in prison for spreading videos "with indecent language that undermines decency and public morality".
The ruling came after Iraq's government launched a campaign to "clean up" social media content it deems immoral.
