Ukraine is fighting for its life and the US's new support package of SEK 660 billion will with one hundred percent certainty help to "stop the bleeding". The total amount is as large as what the US has given in total in the last two years, says New York Times Ukraine reporter Marc Santora in the newspaper's podcast "The Daily".
The most important thing in the package is the quantity itself, he says. Ammunition stocks are replenished, air defenses are strengthened and counterattacks are improved. But it will probably take a month or two before the support makes a difference on the "incredibly deadly" front, notes Santora, a window of time that Russia is sure to want to take advantage of.
- The coming month is going to be particularly violent, he says.
In Foreign Policy, Jack Detsch writes that Russia probably has more weapons than Ukraine for the rest of 2024, even with the US's new aid package included.

Support of 660 billion to Ukraine clubbed in the Senate
The Senate of the United States Congress has voted yes to the big package of 95 billion dollars with support to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The largest part, 61 billion dollars, approximately 660 billion kroner, goes to Ukraine.
Republican group leader Mitch McConnell has fought against strong forces in his party for the package to Ukraine to become a reality. Together with the majority leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer, they have tied support for Ukraine with support for Israel to get it through, AP reports.
- This is one of the greatest days that I have been part of, McConnell says, adding that for now the isolationists have been defeated.
Last Saturday, the support package was voted through in the House of Representatives, where there has been an infected battle and delayed support to Ukraine by several months. After the Senate's yes, now only Joe Biden's signature is missing. The president announces that he will sign the package on Wednesday.
In CNN, writer Laura He focuses on another part of the aid package: the part that states that Tiktok can be banned in the United States. It would be a heavy blow to China's tech dreams and deepen the rift between the US and China, she writes.

Biden: Will start sending weapons to Ukraine this week
After the Senate voted through the support package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, President Joe Biden says he will immediately sign the proposal, reports CNN.
"I will sign the bill as soon as it is on my desk tomorrow (Wednesday) so we can begin sending weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week," Biden said in a statement.
Ukraine's needs are urgent, Biden writes further. The support in the package is worth around 660 billion Swedish kronor, or 61 billion dollars.
The US Department of Defense has prepared a weapons package worth one billion dollars in a first shipment, according to TT.
