If, as expected, the extreme right advances strongly in the EU elections in June, the Union's climate package is in mortal danger. This is what the one chairman of the green parliamentary group, the Belgian member of parliament Philippe Lamberts, told The Guardian.
- The risk of the green given being killed is very high. I mean, they make no secret that after the ideological battle over asylum and migration, the European Greens are given their next target.
According to Lamberts, it is also crucial that Ursula von der Leyen wins re-election as Commission President if the Green Party is to have any chance at all.
- Without her, there would be no green light. Let's not fool ourselves. And I don't see any other conservative politician who would dare to continue what she started, let alone start from scratch.
