While German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is thinking about peace, his Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is thinking about war. That's what Der Spiegel writes in a report about the split in the German Social Democrats.
This week, Pistorius warned that Germany must be ready for war in 2029. He has long argued for the reintroduction of general conscription in the country, inspired by Sweden.
But the proposal has weak support in the governing traffic light coalition, as well as in one's own party.
Party leader Olaf Scholz has completely dismissed Pistorius' prestige issue.
"He announced this to the people in Sweden, of all places," writes the newspaper.
There are indications that Pistorius will present a watered-down version of the original proposal next week.

Despite the scandals: AFD looks to be moving forward on Sunday
In the EU's largest country, Germany, the Greens are heading for a disastrous election, while the right-wing parties are moving forward. This is shown by the TV channel ZDF's opinion poll Extra, which was published on Thursday evening.
It is notable that the Greens appear to be falling back significantly compared to the 2019 EU election, when the party received over 20 percent of the vote. In the survey, the party gets only 14 percent.
14 percent also gets the far-right AFD, which, despite several scandals linked to Russia and China during the election campaign, looks set to win some extra mandates after the election.
Germany, which has 96 seats out of 720 in the European Parliament, votes on Sunday.
