Violence on the streets of Maputo after the election results
Unrest is spreading in Mozambique after the presidential election in which the incumbent governing party Frelimo won a landslide victory. The opposition leader has announced a two-day general strike, reports the news agency AIM.
On Thursday afternoon, as the election results began to be known, groups of angry youths took to the streets of the capital Maputo to show their displeasure.
The unrest also spread to the town of Ressano Garcia on the South African border, which resulted in the border being temporarily closed.
There are reports that police officers have been killed in connection with the unrest, but local authorities deny the reports. In one case, a protester is said to have died from his injuries after a clash with the police, but in that case too, the information has not been confirmed.
The election campaign in Mozambique has been marred by unrest, assassinations of opposition politicians and allegations of electoral fraud.

The ruling party wins big in Mozambique
The ruling party in Mozambique, Frelimo, wins the presidential election with 71 percent of the vote. The BBC reports.
The relatively unknown Daniel Chapo becomes the new president after the outgoing president Filipe Nyusi served two terms.
Opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane received 20 percent of the vote.
Frelimo has ruled the country for 49 years. The election campaign in Mozambique has been marred by protests, accusations of electoral fraud and the murder of opposition politicians. EU observers have criticized the election, saying some results may have been manipulated.
- The results do not correspond to reality. They are going against justice, says Electoral Commission Vice President Fernando Mazanga.
