The war in Sudan

Death toll rises in Sudan after attacks on civilians

The death toll is rising in the state of al-Jazirah in Sudan after the paramilitary group RSF carried out attacks on civilians, AFP reports. More than 120 people have been killed as the RSF, which is at war with Sudan's army, has stepped up its attacks in the past week.

The escalation is believed to be due, among other things, to the fact that one of the militia group's commanders joined the Sudanese army. Activists in the area accuse RSF of "revenge attacks" as a result of the defection.

The country's health minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim calls the attacks "a massacre" and states that over 200 have been injured.

According to Unicef, at least ten children have been killed by RSF in the past week.

UN report: Sexual violence in Sudan 'staggering'

The Sudanese militia group RSF, which is at war with Sudan's army, has committed a large number of rapes during the civil war. This is stated by the UN in a new report on the situation of civilians in the war-torn country.

The report has been prepared in connection with an independent investigation led by lawyer Mohamed Chande Othman.

"The large scale of sexual violence that we have documented in Sudan is astonishing," he says in connection with the publication of the report.

The victims who were raped or abducted as slaves are between eight and 75 years old, according to the report.
