Putin: “Agreements” in Alaska can create solution
Russian President Vladimir Putin says that “agreements” reached with US President Donald Trump in Alaska open the way for peace in Ukraine, reports Reuters.
The statement comes in connection with Putin’s visit to China where the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has arranged a major meeting. Yesterday he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian President Narendra Modi and other Asian leaders.
– We appreciate the efforts and proposals from China and India aimed at facilitating the resolution of the “Ukrainian crisis”. I would also like to mention that the agreements reached at the recent meeting between Russia and the US in Alaska contribute to this goal, says Putin.
At the same time, he once again blames the West for triggering the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, writes AFP.
Analysis: They are beginning to imagine a future without the US
The war in Ukraine has reshaped both the world order and trade relations. This became very clear during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in China. A meeting we should all pay close attention to, writes Sky News' Ed Conway in an analysis.
The war will not only reshape Europe's borders, but the contours of the entire world. China has increased its exports of transport equipment to Russia by 500 percent and India imports the majority of its oil from Russia.
"Asian countries have begun to imagine something they never really imagined before: an economic future that is not dependent on the American financial infrastructure," writes Conway.
But not all countries have been forced into the SCO because of the war in Ukraine. American tariffs and moves by Donald Trump have pushed India there, write David Charter and Amrit Dhillon in an analysis for The Times.
“Modi invited President Xi to India for the Brics summit next year to continue the thaw driven by Trump’s ‘America First’ line,” they write.

Source: Zelensky to meet European leaders on Thursday
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is to meet several European leaders in Paris on Thursday, a source told AFP.
The goal is to continue talks on a possible peace between Russia and Ukraine.
– We are planning such a meeting. Donald Trump is not expected to be there yet, the source said.
The most important thing for Ukraine is to agree on security guarantees during the meeting and that diplomacy must resume, because “Russia is trying to wriggle out of the talks,” the source continued.
The last meeting was at the White House on August 19. Several leaders were present, including US President Donald Trump, France's Emmanuel Macron, Britain's Keir Starmer and Germany's Friedrich Merz.

Russian jamming attack on von der Leyen's plane – landed with paper maps
Russia has carried out a jamming attack that knocked out the GPS system on the plane of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This is reported by the Financial Times.
von der Leyen was about to land at an airport in the city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria when the GPS system suddenly stopped working. They had to use paper maps to navigate and land. Three sources who have been informed of the incident tell the FT that it is being investigated as a Russian jamming operation.
– The entire airport's GPS system went down. It was clear jamming, says one of the sources.
The information is then confirmed by both the European Commission and Bulgaria, reports Reuters.
GPS jamming attacks are traditionally used as a military means to protect sensitive locations. But over the years it has become increasingly common to disrupt civil societies, writes the FT.
