Judge: Bolsonaro wanted to establish a dictatorship
The
trial of Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro entered its final
stages on Tuesday as the country's Supreme Court began deliberations on
the case, several media outlets report. Bolsonaro is accused of
attempting to carry out a coup d'état after losing the election three
years ago.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is presiding over the
trial, says Bolsonaro attempted to establish a dictatorship in the
country. Both prosecutors and lawyers will now make their closing
arguments. Next week, the five judges in the Supreme Court will vote on
whether to acquit or convict Bolsonaro.
If Bolsonaro is convicted on all charges, he risks being sentenced to more than 40 years in prison.
Police take action against disturbances in connection with the trial
The
federal police in Brazil have taken action against disturbances in
connection with the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven
of his allies that began in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, reports O
Globo.
Security has been strengthened, among other things, by
calling in riot police. The five judges who will rule in the case have
access to their own police patrols that will be able to support in the
event of attempted intrusions or attacks, the newspaper writes.
There are currently no concrete threats to the trial, according to the police.
Next
week, the judges will vote on whether Bolsonaro, who has been charged
with attempting a coup d'état after the 2022 election, should be
acquitted or convicted.
