Only when the situation in the country is completely stable can the military junta in Mali relinquish power. This is what the junta-appointed Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga says in a televised statement, AFP reports.
It is the first indication that the junta can at all imagine seeing a civilian rule in the future since the promised elections earlier this year failed. However, he did not give a timetable for when stability could be achieved.
The statement comes after the junta last week first banned the country's media from reporting on political parties and then indefinitely banned all political activity.

The African Union wants to see plans for democracy in Mali
The African Union demands that the military government in Mali submit a plan for how the country will return to democracy, AFP reports. Earlier this week, the junta banned all political activity for the time being on the grounds that it wanted to maintain public order.
All media coverage of political parties has also been banned.
The junta has faced fierce international criticism since it failed to live up to its promise to hold elections in February. In a statement, African Union President Moussa Faki Mahamat now expresses deep concern over recent developments in the country.
The junta took power through a coup in 2021 and has since severed ties with former colonial power France and instead forged closer ties with Russia.
