The Russian invasion. The outside world's response
ISW warns of Russian victory if US support is not forthcoming
Ukraine will not be able to maintain the current front line against the Russians unless the US quickly resumes its military support to the country. This is what the American think tank ISW writes in a new report, according to The Hill.
The think tank warns that Russia is gaining the upper hand on the battlefield. According to ISW, only the United States can assist the Ukrainians with the anti-aircraft weapons and artillery shells necessary to defend themselves against the Russians.
ISW researcher Frederick Kagan writes that since the beginning of the year, Russia has managed to conquer an area as large as the American city of Detroit. He warns that further delays or halting of US support will ultimately lead to Russian victory.

The Republican urges colleagues to stop voting
Republican JD Vance is urging his colleagues in the House of Representatives to block the debate on renewed aid to Ukraine, which is scheduled for Saturday. This is stated by three sources for Politico.
Vance is one of the main critics of the US providing military support to Ukraine.
According to the sources, Vance believes that there is no point in going ahead with a vote on new Ukraine aid, as long as the Republicans have not passed their demands for tighter border controls against Mexico.
In addition to renewed support for Ukraine, the House of Representatives will also vote on support for Israel and Taiwan, among other things.

Biden wants to sign new aid package "immediately"
Joe Biden is delighted by the news that the House of Representatives plans to vote on military aid to, among other things, Ukraine and Israel this weekend, writes AFP.
- I intend to sign the law immediately to send a clear message to the outside world: We stand with our friends, and do not intend to let either Iran or Russia win, he says.
The US's large aid package to, among other things, Ukraine has been stuck in the House of Representatives for several months as Republican Speaker Mike Johnson refused to call for a vote. Johnson announced earlier on Wednesday that he has split the package into four different bills and that he is calling for a vote on Saturday night, local time.

Analysis: Paradoxically, the EU's focus is on the Middle East
The EU has a great opportunity to strengthen Ukraine's defense against Russia, but a small opportunity to influence the conflict in the Middle East. That's what Politico's Barbara Moens, Jacopo Barigazzi and Nicholas Vincur write in an analytical text on the occasion of the EU summit starting on Wednesday evening.
They point out that the EU's influence in the Middle East pales in comparison to that of the US at the same time that Ukraine, a candidate country for the union, is appealing for more help. It is then "paradoxical" that the conflict in the Middle East seems to be the central issue during the summit, they write.
"The EU wants to appear as a major power that can make the notoriously stubborn Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu waver".
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi gave a boot to his allies in the West this weekend, writes Euronews' Mared Gwyn Jones. Zelenskyy wondered how France, Britain and the United States could so quickly protect Israel's airspace during Iran's attack when Ukraine's calls for similar help have been rejected for more than two years.
Mared Gwyn Jones writes that this is a way for Zelenskyj to increase pressure on the EU, which has failed to fulfill its promises on ammunition deliveries.

The Russian invasion. The world's reactions
Two people arrested in German Bavaria - suspected of spying for Russia
Two people have been arrested in German Bavaria, suspected of spying on behalf of Russia, writes Der Spiegel.
According to information to the German newspaper, the individuals have spied on American bases and planned attacks on military transport routes. The goal must have been to undermine Germany's support for Ukraine.
TV4 Nyheterna's foreign correspondent Jona Källgren says that it is not unusual for spies to be arrested.
- But according to the German prosecutor's office, they must have planned to carry out sabotage against targets inside Germany to stop arms deliveries to Ukraine. That makes it all the more serious.
