The Israel-Hamas war

Hours after Biden's speech - new attacks on Rafah: "Not stopped for a moment"

Israel subjected Rafah to heavy attacks on Saturday, reports AFP. The attacks come just hours after US President Joe Biden spoke about Israel's ceasefire proposal in a speech.

- From the beginning of the night until the morning, the bombardment from aircraft and artillery has not stopped for a moment, a resident of western Rafah told AFP.

Rafahbon adds that there are Israeli snipers on the roofs, which makes "the situation very dangerous".

Shortly after Biden's speech, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel will continue the war until it has achieved its goals.

In his speech, Biden urged Israel and Hamas to seize the opportunity for a ceasefire. Hamas has responded positively to the proposal.

Expert: Settlements have expanded during the war

The Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank have grown significantly during the war in Gaza. Since October 7 last year, Israeli settlers have taken almost 15,000 hectares from Palestinians. This is what the Israeli organization Kerem Navot says in a report from the New York Times.

Although the West Bank is governed by the Palestinian Authority, not Hamas, the Israeli military has greatly increased its presence in the West Bank. This has made it easier for settlers to take control of more land.

- Violence and expanded settlements go hand in hand. They take revenge on Palestinians by taking more and more land, says researcher Dror Etkes at Kerem Navot.

Netanyahu: No ceasefire until Hamas is 'destroyed'

No permanent ceasefire in Gaza can be discussed until Hamas is "annihilated", said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement according to Reuters.

Yesterday, US President Joe Biden presented an Israeli peace proposal that would begin with a six-week ceasefire. During that time, Hamas and Israel would negotiate a permanent end to the war. Hamas has said that it views such a proposal "positively".

During yesterday's speech, Joe Biden particularly emphasized that he does not believe that Hamas is any longer capable of harming Israel.

The Minister: I will bring down the government if it accepts a ceasefire

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir says he is prepared to dissolve the government if Benjamin Netanyahu agrees to a ceasefire before Hamas is "eliminated". The minister writes that on X.

He writes that the agreement that was first presented by US President Joe Biden yesterday would mean an end to the war and that Israel "gives up" to Hamas.

"Agreeing to such an agreement is not the absolute victory - but an absolute loss."
