Political situation in Belarus

Opposition leader: Belarus is terrified

Opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who works in exile, has warned Belarusians to protest today's "pseudo-election" this year, international media reports.

- Belarusians are terrified after four years of repression, she says, who challenged Lukashenko in the election five years ago, to AFP.

Dmitri Vasserman at the Belarusian People's Embassy in Sweden also tells DN that people are more afraid than during the last election.

- Now they control every step, every action and every thought of their citizens.

Dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko has ruled the country since 1994 and the EU has called the election a sham.

New mock election - Lukashenko to extend 30-year rule

Today, another mock election is being held in Belarus, writes the French Le Monde. Dictator Aleksandr Lukashenko has ruled the country for 30 years and will continue to do so, despite his four opponents in the election (all of whom support the regime). All his real political rivals have been imprisoned or fled.

“There is no doubt about the outcome of the election,” the newspaper writes.

The polling stations opened at 06:00 Swedish time. Opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has urged voters to write “Against all” on their ballots. This time, however, she has advised against protests because she is concerned about the government’s response to the people who are demonstrating.

But it is not impossible that this will be Lukashenko’s last term, writes the US-funded Radio Free Europe. The 70-year-old is surrounded by rumors about his deteriorating health and he himself has spoken of the need for a generational change.
