Political situation in the UK
British minister: We should be more like Donald Trump
The UK has a lot to learn from the new US president Donald Trump, says the country's finance minister Rachel Reeves. In a long interview with The Times, she says that the UK needs to be more enthusiastic, positive and vocal when it comes to highlighting the country's strengths.
- We are an absolutely fantastic country, she says, pointing to successful British universities, talented entrepreneurs and successful AI initiatives, among other things.
This month, Reeves has visited both China and the World Economic Forum in Davos to attract investment in the UK. The British should stop apologizing for themselves and instead "blow out" everything that the country is good at, says the Labour minister.
Political situation in Slovakia
Fico's message after the large protests: Will not resign
In Slovakia, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets to show their dissatisfaction with the country's Prime Minister Robert Fico, several media outlets report. On Friday, around 60,000 people gathered in the capital Bratislava in what was described as the largest demonstrations in the country since 2023.
Many are demanding Robert Fico's resignation after he and his government criticized the EU and NATO and instead moved closer to Russia. In December, Fico went to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The prime minister himself responded to the speech in a radio interview earlier today.
- The government can only be changed when there are elections, he says.

The Syrian War The New Regime
US Shared Intelligence with Syria's New Regime
The US has shared secret intelligence with the new regime in Syria after the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad, reports the Washington Post, citing sources. The intelligence concerns threats from the terrorist group IS.
The newspaper notes that HTS, the group that overthrew the regime and took power in the country, itself has links to the terrorist group al-Qaeda. Officials the Washington Post spoke to emphasize that the information sharing was only about "a mutual interest" in preventing the Islamic State from gaining a new foothold and that HTS remains a terrorist organization in the eyes of the United States.
On at least one occasion, American intelligence is said to have helped prevent an IS attack in Damascus. The dialogue between HTS and the US has taken place in direct meetings, according to the newspaper.
Talks between the US and the new regime are said to have begun about two weeks after HTS came to power.
