Election in Belarus

Lukashenko heads for expected victory – gets 87.6 percent

Most people had already decided that Alexander Lukashenko would win Sunday's mock election in Belarus. On Sunday evening, the first exit poll in the country showed that the authoritarian leader would get 87.6 percent of the vote, international news agencies report.

The election has been heavily criticized by the US and the EU, among others. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called the election a "scam".

Lukashenko has close ties to Vladimir Putin and has ruled Belarus since 1994.

Baerbock: Tough day for all who yearn for freedom

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock says that the people of Belarus have no choice in the mock election being held in the country today. Instead of free and fair elections, Belarusians are facing repression and human rights violations, according to the German minister.

“It is a difficult day for all who long for freedom and democracy,” she wrote on X.

Sunday’s election is about giving the country’s authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, another five years in power. Lukashenko, who has close ties to Vladimir Putin, has ruled the country since 1994.
