Starmer: I want to get asylum seekers out of hotels
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer promises to speed up the government's work to get asylum seekers out of the country's hotels, an issue that has led to political debate and many protests on the country's streets.
Starmer has previously said that the goal is to get all so-called "migrant hotels" out before the end of his term, by 2029 at the latest. In a new interview with the BBC, the Prime Minister says that he wants to solve the problem before then, without giving any more detailed timetable.
- I completely understand why people are so worried about this.
In June, figures from the Home Office showed that around 32,000 asylum seekers were staying in over 200 hotels in the country.
Tories slam government: “It will only get worse”
UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper promises that the current government will bring forward “radical reforms” to modernise the country’s asylum system. In a speech in the British House of Commons, she says, among other things, that the government will review the rules for appeals and asylum applications for family members, British media report.
Chris Philp, home affairs spokesman for the opposition Tory party, is criticising the Labour government’s handling of migration. Not even “their closest friends” think the government’s first year in power has been good, he says.
“Things are not going to get better, they are only going to get worse,” he says in the House of Commons.
