Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) says that Europe will not be blackmailed after Donald Trump's threat to impose tariffs on Sweden and seven other European countries over support for Greenland.

"I will always stand up for my country, and for our allied neighbors," the Prime Minister writes on X.

According to the Prime Minister, Sweden is working together with other European countries to develop a "collective response."

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen tells Ritzau that he is surprised by Trump's statement. Europe's increasing presence in Greenland is about increasing security in the Arctic, he says in a comment.

"We have subsidized Denmark, and all EU countries, and others, for years by not charging tariffs or other forms of refunds. Now, after centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back – world peace is at stake!

China and Russia want Greenland, and there is nothing Denmark can do about it. They currently have two dog sleds to protect them, one of which was added recently. Only the US, under President Donald J Trump, can play this game, and very successfully at that!

No one should touch this sacred ground, especially when the security of the US and the entire world is at stake. To top it all off, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland have traveled to Greenland for unclear reasons.

This is a very dangerous situation for the safety, security and survival of our planet. These countries, which are playing this very dangerous games, have raised the risk to an unsustainable level. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that, in order to protect global peace and security, strong measures be taken to end this potentially dangerous situation, without question.

As of February 1, 2026, all of the above countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland) will be subject to a ten percent tariff on all goods shipped to the United States.

On June 1, 2026, the tariff rate will increase to 25 percent. This tariff will be levied until an agreement is reached for a total and complete purchase of Greenland. The United States has been trying to make this transaction for over 150 years. Many presidents have tried, for good reasons, but Denmark has always refused.

Now, because of the Golden Dome and modern weapons systems, both offensive and defensive, the need for a purchase is even more urgent.

Hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent on a security program that, with “The Dome,” do, including potential protection of Canada, and this brilliant, but highly complex system can only reach its maximum potential and effectiveness, due to angles, dimensions, and boundaries, if this land is included.

The United States is open to immediate negotiations with Denmark and/or any of these countries that have put so much at stake despite all we have done for them, including maximum protection, for so many decades. Thank you for your attention!
