Military denies kidnapping: “Absurd”

Uganda’s military denies the abduction of opposition leader Bobi Wine, calling the reports “absurd”

“The rumors about his so-called arrest are baseless and unjustified,” army spokesman Chris Magezi told AFP.

According to Bobi Wine’s party, he was abducted by helicopter after security forces stormed his home.

The reports of the abduction come as millions of Ugandans await the announcement of incumbent President Yoweri Museveni as the winner of the election. Wine is Museveni’s main challenger and is particularly popular with the young population. After Thursday’s election, Wine has said that the election was rigged and that the government rigged the ballots.

Opposition leader Bobi Wine fled during police raid

Uganda's presidential candidate and opposition leader Bobi Wine says he fled his home during a police raid on Saturday morning and is now in hiding, AFP reports.

Earlier in the day, his party, the National Unity Party, NUP, stated that he had been abducted by the military, something the military denied.

The raid and flight took place a day after the country's presidential election and after Wine accused Uganda's incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of widespread election fraud.
