The President's Team
Sources: Trump to Fire FDA Chief After Vaping Controversy
US President Donald Trump is planning to fire the head of the country's Food and Drug Administration, Marty Makary, sources told the WSJ.
The decision comes after Makary clashed with Trump over e-cigarettes.
Trump recently berated Makary for his agency's failure to approve flavored e-cigarettes quickly enough, according to sources. In February, Makary refused to approve blueberry and mango-flavored e-cigarettes, or vapes, because he believes they risk encouraging young people to start vaping. He changed his mind and approved the flavors, reportedly after being pressured by the president.
Organizations that oppose free abortion have also wanted to see Makary fired, after he failed to delay the approval of an abortion pill.
According to the sources, the plan is not yet fully finalized, and could change. Makary has not commented on the data.
The Congressional Map Controversy
Virginia Blocks New Electoral Map Favoring Democrats
The Virginia Supreme Court has blocked a new redistricting plan that would favor Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections, NBC News reports.
The decision is a major victory for Republicans, who must defend their slim majority in the House of Representatives.
The redistricting plan was approved in a referendum in April, but the Virginia Supreme Court has ruled that the state legislature violated the rules when they designed the ballot paper in the referendum. The result is therefore invalid, meaning that the old map will be used in the midterm elections.
