Political situation in Iraq
The West warns: Do not punish homosexuality with death
Iraq's parliament is postponing a vote on a criticized bill that includes the death penalty or life imprisonment for same-sex relationships, Reuters reports. The reason is stated to be a lack of time and that "some differences of opinion" remain.
Diplomats from several Western countries have warned Iraq that such a law would have serious consequences for the country's political and economic ties to other countries.
- It would be very difficult to justify close cooperation with such a state, says an anonymous diplomat to the news agency.
Behind the proposal is the Iraqi politician Raad al-Maliki, who believes that Iraq's law on "combating prostitution" from 1988 should be changed so that it instead makes same-sex relations a crime.

The election in the USA The indictment against Trump
Analysis: Trump's sex life will take center stage
Prosecutors in the criminal trial against Donald Trump will focus on the ex-president's history of making derogatory comments about women. That assessment is made by the Washington Post's Isaac Arnsdorf and Hannah Knowles in an analysis.
They note that this strategy may mean that support for him among female voters weakens further.
A large part of the first day of the trial revolved around what evidence should be allowed. Among other things, the prosecutor's side wanted to include information about previous extramarital affairs and show the attention-grabbing film clip where Trump talks about how he usually greets women by "grabbing them by the pussy".
The compromise was that the jury will be able to read an excerpt of the high-profile conversation, but not see the clip itself.
In another analysis in the same newspaper, Devlin Barrett, David Nakamura and Shayna Jacobs write that these trade-offs show how Trump's sex life will be the focus of the trial.

Elon Musk's X/Twitter
Elon Musk wants everyone who signs X to pay
Elon Musk wants to start charging for all new users who post on X. He writes that on the platform, according to Quartz.
"Unfortunately, a small fee for new users to write posts is the only way to get rid of all bot accounts," writes Musk in a thread that is actually about Tesla's layoffs.
AI and "troll armies" can get past current obstacles, writes Musk.
X previously tried charging an annual subscription fee of one dollar to users in the Philippines and New Zealand.

Authority warns: The Great Barrier Reef may die
Large parts of the world are experiencing significant coral bleaching, reports the US weather agency NOAA.
After months of record-warm sea water, parts of the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia are at risk of dying. In total, bleaching has been confirmed in at least 53 countries, territories or local economies.
- From February 2023 to April 2024, significant coral bleaching has been documented in both the northern and southern hemispheres in every major ocean basin, says Derek Manzello at NOAA according to TT.
When the corals are exposed to high temperatures, the algae that live in the coral become stressed and leave the coral animal itself, thus losing its color. Once the algae has left, the coral risks starving to death.
