New Orleans gunman shot dead by police

The gunman who drove into a crowd of people at a New Year's Eve party in New Orleans has died after being shot by police, police told ABC News.

30 people were injured in the attack, which was described as a deliberate act. The driver reportedly drove past barriers set up to carry out the attack, NBC reports.

- He was determined to create the bloodbath he did, says Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick.

The FBI is investigating the attack as an act of terrorism.

Fear and shock in busy neighborhoods: "A ghost town"

People in New Orleans are reporting great fear and horrific scenes after the suspected terrorist attack in the city where a driver drove into a crowd of people at a New Year's Eve party and killed at least 15 people.

Witness Jimmy Cothran took refuge in a nightclub, where people ran to hide under the tables. From the nightclub's balcony, he looked out and saw dead people lying on the ground, he tells NBC News.

The attack took place in a normally very lively area, but now it is characterized instead by shock and sadness, reporter Maddie Kerth tells CNN News.

- I have never seen the French Quarter (the name of the area, editor's note) as a ghost town before, especially not during a holiday.

42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar is singled out - had an IS flag in the car

42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar has been identified as the perpetrator behind the suspected terrorist attack in New Orleans, the FBI says, according to the AP.

According to the FBI, an IS flag was found in the car used during the attack. Authorities are now investigating possible connections to the jihadist terrorist group or other terrorist organizations.

Sources tell Fox News that four or five more people are being investigated for involvement in the attack.

The man was shot dead by police after killing 10 and injuring more than 30 people. The car he used was reportedly rented through a car rental service.
