New talks on ceasefire in Gaza – including hostages
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken by phone with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty, according to the White House. The conversation revolved around a ceasefire in Gaza and the hostage negotiations.
According to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, “indirect negotiations” with Hamas over the release of the hostages have resumed, writes AFP. He also tells relatives of Liri Albag, a now 19-year-old soldier who was taken hostage, that “efforts are underway”.
Before Christmas, new hope was raised in the Middle East for a ceasefire when Israel and Hamas held indirect negotiations in Doha together with Qatar, Egypt and the US. But after initially talking about progress, accusations of “new conditions” that created “new obstacles” followed.
Hamas' armed wing releases hostage video
Hamas' armed wing has released a video of what it claims is the now 19-year-old soldier Liri Albag, who was taken hostage in October 2023, The Guardian reports.
In the undated video, which is three and a half minutes long, she calls on the Israeli government to ensure her release. In a statement, the woman's relatives said the video "torn our hearts to pieces" and added: "This is not the daughter and sister we know. Her severe mental suffering is obvious".
The family is appealing to all decision-makers to "make decisions as if it were your own children who were there". Defense Minister Israel Katz tells the family that they are in “indirect negotiations” with Hamas and that “efforts are underway” to free the hostages, writes AFP

Israel-Hezbollah
Hezbollah during the ceasefire: “Patience may run out”
Hezbollah’s patience is running out and now leader Naim Qassem says that it is ready to attack Israel even before the ongoing ceasefire in Lebanon is over, writes AFP.
The leader emphasizes that Hezbollah wants to “enable Israel to fulfill the agreement” and that they remain patient.
– But that does not mean that we will wait out the 60 days, nor does it mean that we will be patient for less than 60 days, he says.
The 60-day ceasefire came into effect on November 27, but both sides have since accused each other of violating it.
