The Syrian War The New Regime

Syria's Justice Minister Watched Women Executed

In a viral video clip, Syria's new Justice Minister Shadi Al-Waisi reads out the death sentences against two women – and then watches them being executed. The women are shot in the head on charges of "corruption and prostitution".

Two videos of the incident have circulated on social media – and now the website Verify-sy has fact-checked the clips and compared them with new images and videos of Shadi Al-Waisi. Both facial features and voice match to a high degree.

The fact-checking website has also received confirmation from people in the Syrian government that the man in the clip is in fact Shadi Al-Waisi.

Al-Waisi was a judge at the time. A representative of the Syrian government, who wishes to remain anonymous, writes in a statement that the execution followed the rules of the time.

"However, we would like to point out that this process reflects a chapter we have left behind," the representative writes.

According to DN, the clips are from 2015.

The Syrian regime eyes the wallets of the Gulf states

Syria's new Islamist regime calls on the US to lift its sanctions.

- They constitute an obstacle and a problem for the rapid recovery and development of the Syrian people. We are in need of support and cooperation, says Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani.

The statement was made in Qatar in connection with a trip to the region to seek support for the new regime, writes Al Jazeera. The Syrian government is thirsty for investments from the wealthy Gulf states in order to rebuild the country after the civil war.

- The government faces enormous challenges in getting Syria back on its feet. It needs money, says Al Jazeera's correspondent Steffanie Dekker.

Qatar stood out among the other Arab states by never recognizing Bashar al-Assad as president.
