US Elections Trump's Victory

Analysis: Trump is now more powerful than ever

Donald Trump, who is today formally elected the next president by Congress four years after the storming of the Capitol, is more powerful and more popular than ever. This is what Stephen Collinson writes for CNN.

"On January 6, 2025, the most stunning political comeback in American history will be cemented, and a new administration that could mean the president-elect's most extreme stress test of the Constitution ever."

The day will be yet another bitter reminder for Democrats that they failed to defeat a convicted criminal who has been impeached twice, Collinson continues.

Trump now faces a world that is significantly different - and more threatening - than when he left the White House four years ago, writes Dan Balz in the Washington Post.

The “America first” agenda – including mass deportation of migrants, tax cuts and downsizing of the state apparatus in line with Elon Musk – is put in the foreground, writes Balz, and continues:

“However, Trump will likely quickly become embroiled in foreign policy challenges.”

Balz points to, among other things, the protracted wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as China, which Trump has threatened with high trade tariffs.

Pope appoints Trump-critical cardinal as archbishop

Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Robert McElroy as the new archbishop of Washington DC, American media report. 70-year-old McElroy was an opponent of several of Donald Trump’s decisions during his first term.

Above all, he has harshly criticized the incoming president’s immigration policy. In 2017, he spoke openly about how Americans should “put a stop to” Trump’s plans to mass deport illegal immigrants.

Historian Massimo Faggioli, who follows the pope closely, tells Reuters that appointing McElroy is a “bold move.”
