Greenland Crisis US Threats

Trump: May Impose Tariffs on Countries That Do Not Agree to Greenland Plan

Donald Trump is threatening to impose tariffs on countries that oppose US plans to take over Greenland, international news agencies report.

The US president is also repeating previous statements that the US “needs” Greenland for security reasons.

Trump’s statements about Greenland have led to strong reactions, both from European leaders and American politicians. Several European countries have also begun sending military personnel to the island.

Rumblings within the party: “Could lead to impeachment”

Invading Greenland is a “disastrous idea” that could result in the impeachment of Donald Trump. This is according to Republican Congressman Don Bacon.

In an interview with the Omaha World-Herald, Bacon, who has previously criticized Trump on several occasions, says that Republicans in the House of Representatives would “lean towards” impeachment if the president makes his rhetoric a reality.

– I’ll be honest. There are so many Republicans who are angry about this. If Trump goes ahead with a takeover, it would mean the end of his presidency.

On Friday, Trump-critical Republican senators Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski will travel to Copenhagen to underscore the party’s opposition to the Greenland plans.

Denmark’s response: “Could be really, really tough”

The work in the US-Greenland working group will not – as the White House claims – revolve around how the US will take control of Greenland, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told Danish media.

He says that the group will instead find a way to allay Americans’ security concerns, but with respect for the parties’ red lines.

– That’s what we agreed on, and that’s what I can relate to. I was at the meeting myself, and that’s what we stand for.

He takes a new tack and says that the statement from the White House shows that the work can be “really, really hard”.

US envoy to visit Greenland in March: “Trump has put his foot down”

US special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, plans to visit the island in March. In an interview with Fox News, Landry says that President Donald Trump is serious about his intentions to take over Greenland.

– The president is serious. I think he has put his foot down. He has made it clear to Denmark what he wants, and now it is a matter of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance reaching an agreement, says Landry.

Following the meeting between the US, Greenland and Denmark at the White House, there have been different interpretations about what the working group that has been decided on will do. According to the White House, the work will revolve around how the US will take over control of Greenland.

Denmark has instead emphasized that the group should find a way to meet the Americans' security wishes "with respect for red lines".

Voices about the threat
Canadian Prime Minister: We stand behind Denmark

Greenland's future is a matter for Greenland and Denmark. This is what Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says according to Danish TV2.

- We are NATO partners with Denmark [...] Our obligations to Articles 5 and 2 remain. We fully stand behind them, he says at a press conference in China during a meeting with Xi Jinping.

He does not mention the United States, which is also a NATO partner and whose president has repeatedly said that he wants to make Canada the country's 51st state.
