The protests in Iran are waning after the regime cracked down on protesters, resulting in thousands of deaths.

A week after nationwide demonstrations shook the country, an organization that follows the developments states that the protests are waning in strength, reports AFP.

According to the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which follows the developments, the repression has “probably stifled the protest movement for the time being”, but adds that the protests may resume as “the regime’s extensive mobilization of security forces is unsustainable”.

Economic hardship and widespread popular dissatisfaction with the theocratic dictatorship drove tens of thousands of Iranians onto the country’s streets a week ago.

Since then, reports of thousands of dead protesters have reached the outside world despite the regime shutting down the internet.

The US has said it is ready to intervene militarily in Iran, and President Donald Trump has threatened “very strong action” if Iran executes people who participated in the protests.

“If they hang them, you’re going to see things,” the president said in an interview with CBS on Tuesday.
